In the early days of steam locomotives, transporting timber and goods from Alishan to Chiayi involved a well-coordinated process. Freight trains would first travel to Fenqihu Station, where they would undergo a locomotive change. After replenishing supplies and resting, the trains would continue their journey towards Chiayi. The locomotives from Alishan would then tow empty wagons back up to Alishan. Upon reaching Zhuqi Station, the trains would once again undergo a locomotive change, switching to vehicles designed for flat terrain and proceeding to Chiayi Station. Empty wagons would then be towed back to Fenqihu by locomotives from Fenqihu.
