As the era of mechanized forestry equipment dawned, the demand for machinery repair and maintenance grew significantly. This was particularly true for the Alishan Forest Railway, which necessitated the establishment of a large-scale repair facility. With its specialized repair capabilities, the Fenqihu Loco Shed played a crucial role in keeping the railway’s locomotives and equipment operational. In the early days of the Alishan Forest Railway, railway workers displayed remarkable self-sufficiency and ingenuity in maintaining and repairing their locomotives. Utilizing a variety of equipment, including lathes, shapers, and drilling machine, they transformed raw materials into essential components for the trains. At the heart of this self-sufficient approach lay a sophisticated mechanical transmission system. Engines or motors provided the power source, which was then transmitted to a line shaft via belts. This line shaft, in turn, powered various transmission devices, leading to the operation of the machinery used to fabricate train parts.
