Initially, the Alishan Forest Railway used 13-ton, two-cylinder SHAY steam locomotives. However, 18-ton, two-cylinder SHAY steam locomotives were purchased due to high-altitude railway construction needs. As the railway’s altitude increased, so did the gradients. To transport forestry resources more efficiently, 28-ton, three-cylinder SHAY steam locomotives were introduced to operate on the mountainous section from “Zhuqi to Alishan.” The No. 29 locomotive you see now is a 28-ton, three-cylinder SHAY steam locomotive. It was manufactured by the American LIMA Locomotive Works in 1913. It was put into service in 1914, retired in 1969, and has been on static display at the Fenqihu Loco Shed ever since.
